Abstract

O objeto deste artigo é a formação do espaço minero siderúrgico em Minas Gerais. Sabe-se que a presença do minério de ferro no Quadrilátero Ferrífero, isoladamente, é fator insuficiente para esta realização. Este recurso mineral é mobilizado pela elite instruída (em leis e técnica), atuante no Estado, para dinamizar a região deprimida em que se encontra. Vinculada regionalmente e dotada de mentalidade progressista, esta elite, por meio de seu expertize em planejamento, consegue superar os entraves ao desenvolvimento regional. Sua experiência e o modelo de planejamento e intervenção de Estado desenvolvido por ela são implantados em Minas e compartilhados com o governo central. De suas ações resultam a industrialização nacional e, em Minas Gerais, a implantação de Belo Horizonte, o complexo minero-siderúrgico e uma potente estrutura estatal de apoio à industrialização, com amplas realizações. Este artigo foca o período que transcorre entre o século XVIII e a década de 1960.
