El mecanismo moderno: análisis de filosofías naturales del siglo XVII a partir de una noción teórica

Abstract

En esta tesis seguiré la estrategia consistirá en partir de una versión abstracta de mecanicismo -a la que denomino ‘mecanicismo puro’— y en deducir de dicha noción un conjunto de consecuencias. La conjunción de mi definición de mecanicismo puro y sus consecuencias constituirán una suerte de ‘centro fuerte’ a partir del cual evaluaré distintas doctrinas filosóficas del siglo diecisiete. Acto seguido analizo la filosofía natural de un conjunto de autores del siglo XVII, intentando ‘medir’ el grado de pureza de cada una de las doctrinas allí presentadas. De la aplicación de esta estrategia a casos particulares de filosofías naturales surge la tesis central de este trabajo, la cual puede expresarse del siguiente modo: una manera muy conveniente de caracterizar al mecanicismo del XVII es a partir de una noción teórica que exponga las relaciones conceptuales de un conjunto de tópicos en torno a esta temática, tópicos que aparecen como inconexos en la bibliografía secundaria existente. Más aún, hay fuertes indicios que permiten conjeturar que esta noción teórica de mecanicismo actuó como una especie de ideal al que aspiraron muchas doctrinas filosóficas del siglo XVII, a la vez que fue un punto de referencia en contra del cual se erigieron filosofías naturales alternativas y opuestas.15 Se espera que la estrategia de reconstruir algunos aspectos de la historia de la ciencia y la filosofía de un período de la historia tan singular, proporcione una elucidación más eficiente y coherente del mecanicismo de dicho período y salve al mismo tiempo inconvenientes historiográficos presentes en formulaciones alternativas.
