La voz euskera: ¿invento moderno?

Abstract

En ciertos ámbitos culturales constatamos cierta confusión en torno al origen cronológico, al contenido semántico y a la evolución histórica de algunas voces relacionadas con la lengua vasca, concretamente: Vascón, Vasco; y algunas con doble denominación, una usada normalmente por los hablantes vascos, y su correspondencia entre romanzados. Euskara, Euskera, Uskara “vascuence”, ‘lengua vasca’, considerada “invento” moderno, aparece en el siglo VIII como nombre de persona, Marzuk ibn Uskara. Euskaldun “Vascongado” ‘vascohablante’, sea guipuzcoano, alavés, navarro o de otra parte. Euskal-herria ‘La tierra vasca’ (de habla). Erdara ‘lengua no vasca’. Erdaldun ‘hablante de lengua no vasca’. Antes del siglo XVIII carecían de contenido político. Desde principios del siglo IX hasta avanzada la Edad Media, la voz Navarro designó al vascongado habitante al Sur de los Pirineos.
