A lo largo de la historia, los pamploneses se han expresado en diferentes lenguas: unas escritas, dotadas de sistemas gráficos y consideradas cultas (latín, romances occitano, navarro y castellano, entre las principales), y otra hablada, no escrita oficialmente, mayoritaria entre la población de la ciudad durante la Edad Media, a juzgar por la toponimia y otros datos, e incluso hasta el siglo XVIII entre las clases populares. Los vicarios de las cuatro parroquias y los capellanes del Hospital debían ser vascoparlantes, y lo fueron durante el siglo XVII.
