El vascuence en las puertas de Pamplona (1790)

Abstract

En 1790 hablaba vascuence toda la población de Esquíroz, lugar sito a dos kilómetros y medio al Sur de Pamplona. Algunos ancianos desconocían otra lengua. La mayor parte entendían el castellano siquiera "trivialmente". La obligación de la enseñanza escolar en romance, incluida la Doctrina Cristiana, debió ser vía importante de penetración de la lengua exógena. La nativa predominaba entre los vecinos avanzado el siglo XIX.
