Abstract

Una de las formas tradicionales de nombrar un río fue por la población de paso. En fuentes latinas y romances se llamó Runa, Ruma, Iruna al que baja por Pamplona (en vasc. Irunia, Iruna; Runia, Ruina en fuentes latinas y romances). En Ibero se le une el Arga (Arakil). "Ad Pontem Regine discurrit Arga simul et Runa", de donde pudiera proceder la doble denominación de la villa: "Pons Arga-Pons Regina".
