Vacante el cargo de vicario de la iglesia de San Cernin en Pamplona (1645), fue nombrado para él un sacerdote desconocedor de la lengua vasca. Ante la novedad, los feligreses vascongados entablaron pleito, pidiendo cura conocedor de su lengua, con quien poder confesarse. Intervino como testigo el Padre José Moret, S.J. (1615-1687), nacido en esa parroquia, futuro autor de los "Anales del Reyno de Navarra" y de otras obras históricas; declaró que solamente una de cada quince personas que él confesaba lo hacía en vascuence. Ello revela que hablaba esta lengua, como tantos clérigos y pamploneses contemporáneos.
