Abstract

Los cohetes que diseñó sir William Congreve a principios del siglo XIX y que llevaron su nombre fueron utilizados en diversas campañas bélicas del siglo decimonónico en nuestro país. A pesar de ello, su visibilidad, tanto en los documentos escritos de la época como en el registro arqueológico, es muy baja. Las investigaciones arqueológicas en curso en el campo de batalla de Pavón han contribuido a cambiar esta situación, al hallarse cuatro piezas que pertenecen a cohetes “à la Congrève”. Se trata de piezas que se enroscaban en la base del cohete propiamente dicho y que servían para insertar la larga vara de madera o cola que estabilizaba al proyectil durante su vuelo. Tanto el ejército de la Confederación Argentina como el de la Provincia de Buenos Aires usaron estos cohetes en dicho enfrentamiento, del 17 de septiembre de 1861 en terrenos cercanos a la actual localidad de Rueda (Depto. Constitución, Provincia de Santa Fe). En este trabajo presentamos estos artefactos, discutiéndose sus características generales, sus condiciones de hallazgo y las implicancias interpretativas de su presencia en el campo de batalla, así como las evidencias documentales de su uso en esta campaña militar.
