Abstract

This thesis deals with the development of a house for music at the location of Vienna Airport, which serves as a place to come together, make music and perform. There should be space for performance as well as space for retreat. With reference to the plan to develop a cultural location at the airport and to create space for new things, the music house represents an important cornerstone for the further development of a flourishing Airport City. It functions as a focal point between the urban and rural surroundings. When researching numerous musical epochs, the development history of concert music, the emergence of the first music communities, and the tonal and spatial acoustic peculiarities, I was repeatedly confronted with the interaction between instrument and space. For me, the musician, i.e. the process of making music, is in the foreground. The image of my music colleagues with their respective musical instruments and their specific, musical characteristics was a constant companion to me. The theme of the different timbres of individual instruments is reflected in the design, mainly influenced by the structure of individual musical instruments. Analogous to this are the needs of the musician. These are made up of spatial, private and public interests. Opposites such as quiet/loud, isolated/open, visible/invisible, static/moving, enter into a relationship with each other, from which a conglomerate of spatial milieus can develop. The result is an arrangement of different spatial dimensions: rehearsal, recording and concert.
