Abstract

Este ensaio pretende confrontar a influência de John Milton com a de William Shakespeare na obra de Fernando Pessoa. Tanto um como outro foram autores que Pessoa privilegiou enquanto leitor, desde a juventude até à idade adulta, e que tiveram um papel crucial na construção da identidade autoral do poeta português. A presença de ambos trespassa o pensamento crítico de Pessoa, que regressará frequentemente a Paradise Lost e às grandes tragédias de Shakespeare, nomeadamente a King Lear e a Hamlet, à procura da chave para a elaboração de uma possível obra. As suas leituras de ambos são frequentemente comparativas, mas as avaliações que faz da qualidade de cada um deles levam-nos à constatação de que, no fundo, representam para si influências complementares e não concorrentes. Pessoa, dada a sua propensão para juízos estéticos, também exibe, na avaliação que faz destas obras, a sua tendência para accionar esses juízos de valor com o intuito de promover a própria escrita.
