A determinação do sexo em aves monomórficas é fundamental para o sucesso reprodutivo de espécies silvestres mantidas em cativeiro. A citogenética, a análise do DNA e a laparoscopia com o uso de endoscópios rígidos ou otoscópios são os métodos mais conhecidos para sexagem de aves. A laparoscopia tem sido empregada em diversas espécies animais desde a década de 1970 (Taylor, 1994).
