Diversity and virulence factors of Streptococcus suis

Abstract

Streptococcus suisはブタレンサ球菌症の主要な原因菌として養豚産業に経済的被害を与えるだけでなく,ヒトにも髄膜炎や敗血症を引き起こすことのある人獣共通病原細菌である。特に,2005年に中国四川省においてヒトの集団感染事例が発生して以降,本菌に対する注目度が世界的に高まっている。S. suisは血清学的にも遺伝学的にも多様な株の集団から構成されているが,Multilocus Sequence Typing法による解析の結果,遺伝的に近縁な特定の株集団がブタやヒトに疾病を起こしやすいことが明らかになってきた。しかし,現在までに報告されている様々な病原因子やその候補分子の中で,何が強毒株を他の株に比べてより強毒にしているのかという情報は非常に少ない。近年,これら因子のうち,特定の病原因子や線毛の遺伝子が疾病リスクの高い株集団に偏って分布していることが明らかになりつつある。このような遺伝子は強毒株を識別するマーカーとしての利用も期待されている。
