Abstract

Over the centuries we can gauge the relative popularity, the differing functions and the varying social contexts of the works of Boethius. The aristocratic milieu of early sixth-century Rome is reflected in the manuscripts of Charlemagne's court ; then follows a long period of vulgarisation. Only in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries does the luxury volume of Boethian texts reappear.
