Abstract

L’„orientalisme“ de Goethe. Cette communication procède à une lecture critique, mais dépourvue de préjugés, de la relation de Goethe à l’Orient en tenant compte des thèses développées par Edward Saïd. Elle parvient à la conclusion que si Goethe ne peut en aucun cas être considéré comme un collaborateur des entreprises colonialistes de son époque, il tend néanmoins, dans un esprit d’universalisme eurocentrique, à ‘corriger’ des modèles de pensée «orientaux» en faisant appel à des catégories européennes. L’on trouve par ailleurs dans le Divan occidental-oriental des textes dans lesquels Goethe parvient à se départir de l’attitude eurocentrique pour laisser parler la culture étrangère dans son texte en langue allemande. Ce faisant, il parvient à enrichir considérablement la poésie allemande. Dans les meilleurs moments de l’œuvre lyrique tardive de Goethe s’accomplit ainsi un dépassement du classicisme et un rapprochement d’avec la modernité dans l’esprit de l’«Orient».

Der Beitrag bietet eine kritische, aber unvoreingenommene Untersuchung von Goethes Verhältnis zum Orient vor dem Hintergrund der Thesen Edward Saids. Dabei ergibt sich, dass Goethe keinesfalls als Kollaborateur kolonialistischer Bestrebungen anzusehen ist, dass er aber im Geiste eines eurozentrischen Universalismus bisweilen dazu neigt, „orientalische“ Denkmuster mit europäischen Strukturmodellen zu ,korrigieren‘. Demgegenüber gibt es im West-östlichen Divan Texte, in denen es Goethe gelingt, die eurozentrische Attitüde abzulegen und im Deutschen die fremde Kultur sprechen zu lassen - und damit die deutsche Dichtung auf eine eindrucksvolle Weise zu bereichern. In den besten Momenten der späten Lyrik Goethes vollzieht sich damit eine Überwindung des Klassizismus und eine Annäherung an die Moderne aus dem Geiste des „Morgenlandes“.
