Abstract

Ces sept lettres d’Ippolito Salviani sont envoyées de Rome au bolonais Ulisse Aldrovandi entre avril 1557 et mai 1567. Elles montrent l’instauration d’un échange scientifique entre deux spécialistes d’histoire naturelle qui ne se rencontrent pas, mais célèbrent néanmoins avec enthousiasme leur amitié nouvelle. Un protocole élaboré de sociabilité, qui mobilise plusieurs intermédiaires, leur permet de se rendre mutuellement service. Les lettres montrent également les modalités concrètes de l’envoi d’échantillons naturels, plantes exotiques ou poissons séchés. Outre des informations inédites sur les conditions d’édition et de vente du célèbre livre de Salviani sur les poissons, et sur les relations qu’Aldrovandi entretient avec la capitale romaine, ces lettres apportent une belle illustration des pratiques d’échange savant au coeur de l’Europe humaniste.
