La Danza de la muerte entre el sermón y el teatro

Abstract

Este trabajo plantea la hipótesis razonada de que el Urtext de la castellana Danza de la muerte debió ser un poema latino, entroncado con la tradición europea y obra, probablemente, de un fraile de la observancia reformada, que lo planteó como meditación alegórica. Es lo que nos ha llegado en la versión impresa en Sevilla. En pleno auge de la predicación de los mendicantes, un fraile menor debió cambiar el planteamiento adaptándolo a las necesidades del sermón. Introduce para ello la figura del predicador y conecta la figuración inicial del predicador con aquél a modo de exemplum. Testimonio de esta acomodación es el texto del manuscrito del Escorial.
