À propos des romans de chevalerie à Valence

Abstract

Dix-huit ans avant la première édition connue d'Antadis, qui lance la grande vogue des romans de chevalerie, c'est à Valence qu'est publié en 1490 le premier ouvrage du genre, Tirant lo Blanch. Jusqu'en 1521 Valence figure de façon très honorable dans le concert des villes qui publient des romans de chevalerie. Mais les éditeurs locaux semblent répugner à entreprendre des rééditions et préfèrent chercher de nouveaux filons tels que le roman de chevalerie a lo divino ou l'épopée sans jamais oser exploiter à fond ces diverses possibilités. Quant aux lecteurs valencicns de romans de chevalerie, c'est chez les nobles et les marchands qu'on les rencontre surtout, car les intellectuels boudent ostensiblement cette littérature, et de tels livres sont, par ailleurs, au-dessus des moyens des lecteurs modestes qui ont cependant là ressource de les emprunter.
