Abstract

Animé par des motifs d'ordre théâtral, culturel et politique, Guillen de Castro présente fréquemment dans ses œuvres le thème du roi tyran et du droit de résistance de ses sujets. En accord avec les écrivains politiques de l'Espagne du XVIet du XVII siècle, Guillen définit le tyran comme étant antinomique du prince chrétien et une force contraire au bien public de l'État. D'après cet auteur, c'est le droit de tout sujet soumis à un tel tyran que de désobéir à ses ordres et d'utiliser n'importe quels moyens pour venir à bout de sa tyrannie. Au cas où ces moyens n'aboutiraient pas, en raison de l'obstination du tyran, il est permis à la communauté, ou à un de ses sujets, de le tuer. Le sujet qui résiste au tyran doit être considéré comme un serviteur de la patrie et non comme un traître, car si son geste n'est pas guidé par une ambition personnelle, il est accompli pour le bien public. Quand Guillen prend position en faveur du droit de résistance et du droit au tyrannicide, il tente simplement de ramener le pouvoir monarchique à des limites dictées par la raison et la morale chrétienne. Tout son effort dramatique et intellectuel a pour but de rappeler au prince qu'il ne peut transgresser ces lois sans sombrer dans la tyrannie ou faire face à l'inimitié de Dieu, lequel Dieu est à l'origine et à la base de tout pouvoir terrestre.
