Abstract

Le tact est non seulement une disposition éthique de premier plan, mais aussi et surtout une compétence pédagogique majeure. Tactus en latin, vient du verbe tangere, toucher. Le tact est primitivement le sens du toucher. Il n’est pas seulement ce par quoi nous découvrons les propriétés tangibles d’une chose (sa fluidité, sa mollesse, sa dureté, sa forme, sa température, sa sécheresse ou encore son humidité), il est aussi sensibilité, c’est-à-dire la sensation au moment du toucher. À la différence de la vue, le toucher n’est pas un sens de la distance, mais du contact, de sorte que le touchant est toujours touché et que le touché est inévitablement touchant. En un second sens, qui nous intéresse ici, le tact peut être défini comme un art de juger et une manière de se conduire. Art de juger qui conjugue finesse et justesse et manière de se conduire attentive aux nuances et aux circonstances. Il est l’un et l’autre. En tant que faculté de juger, le tact est une façon de sentir affranchie de la sensation physique. En tant qu’attitude, il est attentif à ce qu’il convient de faire ou de ne pas faire, de dire ou de ne pas dire.
