A terracotta Melian relief was found during the excavation of a Classical cemetery at Troezen. It measures 0.218 x 0.185 m, is well preserved and has traces of a white slip and polychrome paint. It depicts Heracles, Deianira and the centaur Nessus, at the moment the woman is being rescued from the threat of abduction on the banks of the Evinos river in Aetolia, according to the version of the myth given in a fragment of lyric verse attributed with great probability to Bacchylides. This small but ambitious terracotta relief combines the difficult réalisation of a unified composition containing three people, conforming to the fashions of the 2nd and 3rd quarters of the 5th century BC, with the style of the particular figures of earlier periods, that of the Late Archaic period and the lst half of the 5th century BC.
