Abstract

L’objet de cette contribution est d’illustrer un point de vue sociolinguistique sur des emprunts. Contrairement aux conceptions classiques de l’emprunt linguistique qui n’accordent au processus qu’une place périphérique, on espère montrer que l’optique sociolinguistique permet d’éclairer différemment le fonctionnement du signe en parole et dans le discours. On s’appuiera sur quelques emprunts français en anglais afin de montrer que la valeur linguistique de ces signes étrangers au sein du système emprunteur est subordonnée aux fonctions secondaires de communication qui dessinent une différenciation sociolinguistique des groupes sociaux et des locuteurs.
