Abstract

Das Königreich Navarra und Nieder-Navarra (1512-1524). 1512 änderte sich die Geschichte Navarras grundlegend. Ferdinand von Aragon, Vormund und Vater Johannas von Kastilien, annektierte Navarra. Vorhergegangen waren jahrelange Verhandlungen und Verträge zwischen der kastilischen und aragonesischen Krone und dem Haus Foix-Albret. Ferdinand half die Gunst der Stunde und der Vorwand für Kastilien sichere Grenzen zu etablieren. Der letzte legitime König Navarras konnte am 17. 7. 1512 in Blois durch ein Bündnis mit Ludwig xII. gerade noch seine Besitzungen nördlich der Pyrenäen halten. Das Bündnis opferte jedoch den anderen Teil Navarras und an der Grenze zwischen Navarra und Kastilien, um Guipuscoa, Alava, Rioja und Soria, entbrannte bald ein Streit zwischen Frankreich, Aragon-Kastilien und ihren jeweiligen Bündnispartnern. Ferdinand der Katholische gab Nieder-Navarra (merindad de Ultrapuertos), das sechste Merindad Navarras, auf, obwohl es das Hinterland des Königreichs war, wohl auf Grund der Pyrenäen und seine Nähe zur unabhängig gebliebenen Vizegrafschaft Béarn, das immer noch das zentrum der alten königlichen Dynastie der Foix-Albret geblieben war. Diese neue Situation machte aus Pamplona eine der wichtigsten Festungen des Königsreichs, als Einfallstor nach Kastilien und als Schlussstein im Ausbau des kastilischen Machtbereichs.
