Abstract

De tout temps l'homme s'est efforcé de persuader son semblable. La propagande est sans doute aussi vieille que l'humanité. Certains grands mouvements religieux, politiques, économiques ne purent s'accomplir sans un vaste effort de propagande : l'expansion du Christianisme ou de l'Islam, les croisades, les grands voyages de découverte… Mais cette propagande était temporaire, occasionnelle, dispersée, souvent même inconsciente. C'est en 1622 qu'on vit apparaître sans doute pour la première fois une institution officielle consacrée en permanence à la propagande : la Sacrée Congrégation do la propagation de la foi. Mais la Révolution de 1789 devait donner à la propagande officielle une extension nouvelle et les inventions modernes ont centuplé les moyens d'action et le rôle, tant de la publicité, dans le domaine commercial privé — que de la propagande, dans le domaine officiel. Il n'est donc pas étonnant que plusieurs ouvrages consacrés à la propagande aient paru à peu près simultanément.
