The Mapping Mandeville Project is a web-based project that maps locations from the 14th-century travel narrative, The Travels of John Mandeville onto a modern reproduction of the 13th-century Hereford Map. Some locations such as cities are marked on the map. Others are unmarked, but highlight when the user scrolls over them with the cursor. Scrolling over any map element that is in book brings up the name of the location on the screen. Clicking on the element brings up all of the text related to that location. The text is drawn from a modern English edition of The Travels. Viewers can, thus, investigate the map to discover the geography of the book’s stories. This project is pedagogical in nature, with the goal of helping students better understand the geography of the book, while using the book’s text as an introduction to medieval maps.
