Diagnóstico de la maricultura en Ecuador: oportunidades y desafíos

Abstract

La acuicultura es considerada como un mecanismo para satisfacer la creciente demanda de proteínas de la población mundial, mientras que la maricultura tiene un impacto mínimo al ambiente en comparación con otras actividades de producción en los océanos. Ecuador es líder mundial en producción de exportación de camarón blanco (Penaeus vannamei), lo cual demuestra su capacidad en este ámbito. El objeto del presente estudio es emitir un diagnóstico del potencial de la maricultura y describir las oportunidades y desafíos mediante un análisis sobre la investigación y desarrollo realizado sobre los cultivos marinos, vinculado a las normativas de regularización y ordenamiento actuales. Los resultados indican que el país cuenta con las condiciones apropiadas para ampliar la diversificación de la acuicultura con especies marinas de peces, moluscos, equinodermos, y macroalgas; pero con mayor enfoque sobre los cultivos de bivalvos y macroalgas, realizados, hasta ahora, prácticamente solo en la provincia de Santa Elena. Se registra experiencia en larvicultura y engorde de algunas especies en sistemas acuícolas, pero con limitado desarrollo para el fomento de los cultivos marinos. La actividad acuícola se encuentra regulada y ordenada bajo la Ley Orgánica para el Desarrollo de la Acuicultura y la Pesca, su Reglamento y otras normativas secundarias. Sin embargo, las referencias documentales en portales de consulta se encuentran desactualizadas, limitando la información a los interesados (investigadores, inversionistas), disminuyendo el potencial desarrollo de la maricultura multitrófica en el margen costero del Pacífico Ecuatorial, como una actividad que podría contribuir como alternativa para la reducción de la presión sobre las pesquerías locales y con bajo impacto ambiental.
