Abstract

La vitamina D es esencial para el metabolismo especialmente en niños, la deficiencia de esta esta vitamina puede generar diferentes enfermedades como raquitismo, que afecta el tejido óseo, al presentar debilitamiento por ablandamiento, presentando síntomas como retraso en el crecimiento, dolor, sensibilidad ósea, deformidades esqueléticas y retrasos en el desarrollo motor. La deficiencia de la vitamina D en niños es alta de acuerdo con datos presentados en México (54%), Colombia (10-12%), Chile (64%), lo cual sugiere alta prevalencia de esta afectación, convirtiéndose en un problema de salud pública (Cediel et al., 2018). Ahora bien, la baja concentración de Vitamina D puede deberse a baja exposición a la luz solar, bajo consumo de alimentos fuente de la vitamina, como aceite de hígado de pescado, pescados grasos como el salmón, sardina, atún, mariscos, huevos, lácteos fortificados, carne de res y mantequilla.
