Abstract SEVERAL research papers have been published recently with regard to the relationship between shell color and hatchability of chicken eggs. In general the conclusions have been that in certain breeds laying brown eggs the medium to dark brown shelled eggs hatched better than did eggs with light brown shell color (Godfrey, 1947; and Funk and Forward, 1949). Godfrey (1949) also reported on the relationship between egg shell color and breaking strength as well as shell thickness. In his studies the correlation coefficients between egg shell color and breaking strength was +0.363 and between egg shell color and shell thickness +0.372. These values were highly significant, indicating that as shell color increased both shell thickness and breaking strength correspondingly increased. In a subsequent report, Godfrey and Jaap (1949) reported significant correlations between specific gravity of hatching eggs and shell color, between specific gravity and shell thickness, and between shell color and . . .
