Abstract

Artikkeli on katsaus käsityksiin, joita koulutuksen vaikutuksista on viime vuosikymmeninä esitetty. 1950-luvulta lähtien kertyneet tutkimushavainnot loivat perustaa uskomukselle koulutuksen myönteisistä vaikutuksista sekä taloudelliseen kasvuun että laajemminkin yhteiskunnalliseen kehitykseen. Tämä käsitys sai paradigmaattisen muotonsa nk. inhimillisen pääoman teoriassa, joka oli vallitsevana lähes koko 1960-luvun. Vuosikymmenen lopulla alkoi ilmaantua teoriaan kohdistuvaa kritiikkiä, jota vahvistivat erityisesti 1970-luvun alkupuolella tehdyt tutkimukset, jotka antoivat varsin pessimistisen kuvan koulutuksen vaikutuksista ja mahdollisuuksista. Tämä johti evaluaatiotutkimuksen korostumiseen. Suomessa vastaava kehitys on kulkenut muutamia vuosia anglosaksisten maiden tilannetta jäljessä.
