Abstract

El doctor Emiliano J. Crespo (1885-1971), figura clave de la historia de la medicina de Cuenca al introducir la asepsia, la antisepsia y la cirugía moderna, escribió un interesante recuento de su vida titulado Memorias de un cirujano, pública en tres volúmenes. En 1982, el poeta Efraín Jara Idrovo, durante la presentación de la segunda parte (texto recogido en la presente edición a modo de epílogo) escribió: "en las páginas de Memorias de un cirujano sentimos palpitar la presencia de Emiliano J. Crespo. Inextinguiblemente encarnado en la palabra participamos, porque vivimos con él, su tránsito por los centros hospitalarios y científicos de Francia, los más avanzados del orbe en aquel entonces, su retorno al Ecuador y a la ciudad natal, beneficiarios de rigurosa formación científica; su ingente labor en la cátedra de la Universidad de cuenca - cumplido a lo largo de cuarenta años- y sus viajes por distintos parajes de la patria y de nuestro continente (...). En todo buen memorialista alienta un estupendo narrador. Por eso el distro relatador que es el doctor Crespo, despliega atinados recursos narrativos para solicitar la atención del lector." Esta publicación de la Casa Editora de la Universidad del Azuay reedita los dos primeros volúmenes en una edición corregida y profusamente ilustrada a cargo de Gonzalo Ortiz Crespo, reconocido escritor e historiador, nieto de Emiliano J. Crespo, con la colaboración de su hermano, el arquitecto e investigador Alfonso Ortiz Crespo. 526 páginas
