The author gives a concise introduction to sparse matrices. First, the history and goals of sparse matrices are outlined. (The reviewer's book Sparse matrices (1973; Zbl 0262.65021) which was the first text in this area is inadvertently not mentioned.) The second part of this paper deals with a description of storage schemes. This is followed by sections on direct and iterative methods, symmetric positive definite matrices. The paper concludes with brief comments on eigenvalues, least squares and optimization problems.
Numerical computation of eigenvalues and eigenvectors of matrices, Computational methods for sparse matrices, Iterative numerical methods for linear systems, least squares, Numerical solutions to overdetermined systems, pseudoinverses, symmetric positive definite matrices, storage schemes, Direct numerical methods for linear systems and matrix inversion

| selected citations These citations are derived from selected sources. This is an alternative to the "Influence" indicator, which also reflects the overall/total impact of an article in the research community at large, based on the underlying citation network (diachronically). | 0 | |
| popularity This indicator reflects the "current" impact/attention (the "hype") of an article in the research community at large, based on the underlying citation network. | Average | |
| influence This indicator reflects the overall/total impact of an article in the research community at large, based on the underlying citation network (diachronically). | Average | |
| impulse This indicator reflects the initial momentum of an article directly after its publication, based on the underlying citation network. | Average |
