Transición energética y grandes ciudades

Abstract

INTRODUCCIÓN: El presente trabajo analiza la relación entre la energía y las grandes ciudades en el actual contexto de transición energética de los fósiles hacia las fuentes renovables OBJETIVO. La historia muestra que las ciudades han crecido con la capacidad para asegurar su metabolismo, o sea el intercambio de energía y materia con su contexto geográfico. MÉTODO. Se establece una doble correlación: el tamaño de las ciudades históricas con sus bases energéticas y, para las grandes metrópolis actuales, se estima el área circundante para alimentar a sus poblaciones. RESULTADOS. En un contexto sin fósiles, los límites de la productividad agraria y el encarecimiento relativo del transporte conllevarán retos de primera magnitud para las grandes ciudades, especialmente en lo que atañe a la alimentación humana. DISCUSIÓN Y CONCLUSIONES. Todo ello hace pensar en un freno a la globalización de los bienes materiales básicos, en la revalorización de las actividades de proximidad y, probablemente, la paralización del gigantismo de las ciudades y su mayor vinculación con los entornos en base a una economía circular.
