
La bacteriemia causada por Alcaligenes xylosoxidans es rara y existe poca información con respecto a su tratamiento. La mayoría de los pacientes que la desarrollaron presentaban causas predisponentes. Se informa aquí de dos casos de bacteriemia por dicho agente en pacientes ancianos pluripatológicos, polimedicados e inmunocomprometidos. A. xylosoxidans es usualmente resistente a ampicilina, cefalosporinas de primera y segunda generación, aminoglucósidos y quinolonas. Piperacilina-tazobactam, imipenem y trimetoprim-sulfametoxazol inhiben la mayoría de los aislamientos, pero el tratamiento de elección son los carbapenems.
