Lawrence's politics and writings after the Arab revolt show that neither his support for the Zionist enterprise nor his dedication to the Arab cause were without qualifications. Lawrence's evolving positions on Palestine and his attitude toward Arab nationalism reveal a much more "unromantic" approach in furthering Imperial interests than the traditional view would suggest. That did not prevent Lawrence from reaching a quite pioneering vision both of the need to reform the Empire in the Near East and of its eventual demise, specifically with its stated ambition that the Arabs should be «our first brown dominion and not our last brown colony».
