Abstract

Il saggio ricostruisce la vicenda della Milizia di Terra Santa, svoltasi a margine della prima guerra arabo-israeliana nell'estate 1948. Di fronte ai pericoli che incombevano sui Luoghi santi di Gerusalemme, in alcuni ambienti cattolici sorse l'idea di inviare una spedizione di volontari cristiani a difesa dei santuari. Tutte le proposte in tal senso, avanzate dall'Ordine di Malta, dai Cavalieri del Santo Sepolcro e dalla delegazione romana di Terra Santa, fallirono e nessuna delle progettate spedizioni ebbe un'attuazione pratica. Ciň nonostante, questi episodi, e in particolare quello della Milizia francescana, richiamarono l'attenzione della stampa internazionale e delle diplomazie. Sconfessata dal Vaticano e dall'ordine minoritico e osteggiata dalle diplomazie occidentali, la progettata Milizia non ebbe seguito. Tuttavia il grande successo presso fedeli e pubblica opinione dimostra come l'idea, collegando il tema della protezione dei santuari a un possibile ruolo italiano nella regione, riuscisse a riscuotere notevoli consensi. Proprio per questo, l'episodio appare un punto d'osservazione privilegiato per valutare come il mondo cattolico italiano si confrontň con la nascita d'Israele e il tramonto dell'influenza europea nel Levante.
