The management of women with breast cancer has evolved dramatically from radical resections without reconstruction to more conservation resection with breast reconstruction,while maintaining equivalent disease free survival. Over the years, many procedures have appeared and disappeared, and some re-appeared later with renewed enthusiasm. The purpose of this report is to provide insight into the past, an appreciation for the continuously evolving field of breast reconstruction as we know it today, and a discussion of possible implications for the future.
