Miasto i jego prezydent. Kraków w okresie prezydentury Mieczysława Kaplickiego na fotografiach w zbiorach Muzeum Historycznego Miasta Krakowa. Część 2. Gospodarskim okiem

Abstract

The article is the latter in the series introducing photographs dating back to the tenure of Mayor Mieczysław Kaplicki (1875–1959) and found in the collection of the Kraków Photographs Department of the Historical Museum of the City of Kraków. Following a discussion of the pictures dealing with episodes from the cultural life of the city in 1918–1939, this part covers photographic depictions of Mayor Kaplicki as the administrator of Kraków in his time. Kaplicki took up the mayoral reins in the city in 1933 and continued in that function until 1939. His rule had a steady touch, pursued in fulfilment of a clearly defined plan for the future of the city, but not without evident references to its history and to Kaplicki’s great predecessors. The most important contribution to the administration of the city during that tenure was the investment agenda developed with Mayor Kaplicki’s personal involvement and published as The Investment Plan for the Royal Capital City of Kraków for 1937/38–1943/44 (1938). The photographs in the collection of the Historical Museum of the City of Kraków that document Kaplicki’s activity provide for an overall picture of a dynamic and versatile development of the city. The mayor was present at the most significant local events, such as the opening of newly built edifices, the putting into operation of public transport facilities, or ceremonies at universities, schools or churches. An area of activity in its own right, conveyed in highly illustrative iconographic material, was concerned with Kaplicki’s engagement in all kinds of official events held in Kraków in connection with the Polish Legions, including in particular the building of a mound in honour of Józef Piłsudski, which he personally supervised.
