An inter-organizational collaboration model for promoting organic rice production to enhance organic rice standards in Thailand

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the factors influencing inter-organizational collaboration in promoting organic rice production to enhance organic rice standards in Thailand. The research also seeks to develop a model of collaboration that effectively supports the enhancement of organic rice production standards nationwide. A quantitative research methodology was employed, with data collected through a structured questionnaire distributed to 400 organic rice farmers who had undergone an evaluation of the organic rice production system during the 2020/21 agricultural season. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was conducted to assess construct validity and ensure that the proposed model aligns with empirical data. Furthermore, structural equation modeling (SEM) was employed to examine the direct, indirect, and total effects of causal factors influencing inter-organizational collaboration. The findings revealed that the model comprises three core components: leadership, communication, and policy implementation. The model demonstrated a strong fit with the empirical data, as indicated by a relative chi-square value of 1.250 with 78 degrees of freedom, a goodness-of-fit index (GFI) of 0.973, a normed fit index (NFI) of 0.983, a comparative fit index (CFI) of 0.991, and a root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA) of 0.025. Among these components, policy implementation exerted the strongest influence on inter-organizational collaboration (total effect = 0.603), followed by communication (0.455) and leadership (0.141). These results suggest that enhancing policy implementation mechanisms, improving communication strategies, and strengthening leadership are critical for fostering effective collaboration among stakeholders in the organic rice sector. The proposed model provides a valuable framework for policymakers, agricultural extension agencies, and related organizations to support and sustain the growth of organic rice production in Thailand. It also contributes to the broader understanding of collaborative governance and its role in advancing agricultural standards and sustainability practices.
