
Abstract This article describes the chemistry of phenolic resins, reviews their characteristics and properties for various composite manufacturing processes, and discusses some representative applications. It tabulates the Pittsburgh smoke toxicity test results for selected resins. The article also explores phenolic filament winding, phenolic sheet molding compounds, and phenolics for hand lay-up. It outlines the regulatory concerns for phenolic polymers that are derived from feedstocks.
