Natalie Alvarez’s Immersions in Cultural Difference grapples with the impossibility of knowing difference disentangled from how encounters with the other are (and have historically been) staged. Alvarez follows continuities between military training and dark tourism across four sites of cultural immersion to show how bodies are made to practise encounters with difference, rendering otherness as either assimilable or productively elusive.
