SummaryThe normal synovial membrane has been shown to be only slightly permeable to proteins, especially certain glycoproteins. After filtration of serum through a hyaluronic acid gel in vitro a protein profile similar to that of normal synovial fluid is obtained. This indicates that the hyaluronic acid gel of the perisynovial connective tissue is of importance in preventing passage of proteins into the joint cavity.
