“Everybody talks about the weather, but nobody does anything about it.” This statement was made by Charlie Dudley Warner10 many years ago. It is no longer true, since science is studying every aspect of weather and climate. The definition of climate is the weather at a given place over a period of time. Climate is affected by the same physical conditions that affect weather: latitude, prevailing winds, ocean currents, mountains, and proximity to the sea. The climates of the fifty states vary a great deal because of the size of the country and its varied terrain.
