Abstract

El Mercado de Abastos de Santiago de Compostela – Praza de Abastos –, autoría del arquitecto asturiano Joaquín Vaquero Palacios (1900-1998), todavía no ha sido suficientemente estudiado, a pesar de ser una de las obras maestras de la arquitectura española del siglo XX y una infraestructura pública esencial de los sistemas alimentarios de proximidad de Compostela. Símbolo de la cultura alimentaria de Galicia y lección de arquitectura viva y de compromiso con la realidad social, este mercado fue pensado, desde su concepción en 1937, con una perspectiva profundamente visionaria: la de integrar la aldea y el campo en la ciudad, adelantándose con ello a algunos de los principios rectores del Pacto de Milán de 2015 o del Pacto verde europeo de 2019 y siendo, además, un homenaje a la rica cultura arquitectónica de este territorio atlántico.
