Abstract

The following Master's Thesis is based on an ethnographic research in which I aim to understand the negotiations of pleasure and desire that women put into practice in the sexual encounter with men. I understand sexuality as a disputed political terrain where inequalities are reproduced and resisted as a result of patriarchy and other systems of oppression. The understanding of the practices and performances displayed in the sexual encounter between women and men leads us to a better comprehension of the models of sexuality that prevail in our societies, of the origin of certain inequalities in the sexual encounter and of they in which these inequalities are reproduced, resisted, stopped or transformed. The fieldwork was carried out in Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay, and consisted of eleven in-depth individual interviews, a group interview and two instances of participant observation in a workshop of feminist sexuality and eroticism. The results of this research show that the circulation of feminist discourses on female sexuality and pleasure, the increasing adoption of practices of dialogue and sharing between women, and self-exploration and self-eroticism have driven transformations in female sexuality that evince in sexual encounters with men. Women feel more secure and motivated to recognize their desire and pleasure and to implement negotiation strategies in sexual encounters that respond to a search for erotic justice. However, it was evident that there are still great inequalities in the sexual encounter that do not allow them to live a full and satisfactory sexuality. In these sexual encounters I identified certain sexual scripts that seek to place women in a passive, unemotional and agencyless place, where many of them narrate that their demands are not heard, their pleasures are not recorded and that they resort to strategies to avoid situations that could be more dangerous or erotically unfair Máster Erasmus Mundus en Estudios de las Mujeres y de Género.
