Efecto de la adición de furfural sobre la capacidad adhesiva de la proteína de soya

Abstract

Adhesivos para madera como la urea-formaldehído y el fenol-formaldehído son apreciados por su eficacia y el segundo ofrece buena resistencia para usos en ambientes húmedos. Su inconveniente son las emisiones de formaldehído, que en estudios recientes se ha comprobado son nocivos para la salud. El objetivo general del presente trabajo fue desarrollar un adhesivo para madera a partir de proteína de soya y adición de furfural para incrementar su capacidad y hacerlo amigable con el ambiente. Se prepararon diversas formulaciones de proteína de soya-furfural en agua a concentraciones de adhesivo de 10 %,15 % y 20 % y adiciones de furfural base seca de 0 %, 15 %, 25 % y 35 %. La capacidad adhesiva de cada formulación se determinó en ensayo de tensión acorde a la norma ASTM-D 2339-98, mediante probetas de chapas encoladas de pino, a las que se les aplicó una capa uniforme del adhesivo soya-furfural y prensado a 1 MPa, a 150 °C, durante 5 minutos para su curado. Asimismo, se elaboraron y probaron especímenes encolados con urea-formaldehído. Los resultados de resistencia a la tensión fueron de 1.6 a 1.8 MPa sin furfural de 2.5 MPa, con adición de 25 % de furfural a una concentración de 10 %, y a 1.7 MPa con la resina urea-formaldehído. Se concluye que la adición de furfural a la proteína de soya incrementó su resistencia adhesiva, además tuvo mejor desempeño que la resina urea-formaldehído, lo cual permite visualizar su aplicación en la manufactura de tableros.
