The Sound of Change

Abstract

Musical instruments are linked to cultural techniques that are subject to changing conditions. Four projects present their scientific and creative approaches to the cultural heritage of musical instruments. The Musikmuseum Beeskow presents early 20th-century mechanical instruments controlled by punched paper rolls, and discusses their reconstruction and digitisation. Niayesh Ebrahimi and Hanna Hammerich (Leipzig) introduce the AY-3-8912 sound chip to explore the special features of home computer music from the 1980s and the preservation problems of early digital products. Toni Bernhart (Stuttgart/Berlin) transposes vibrations from aerial tramways in order to process them musically and create a transformative documentation of transport heritage. Sebastian Hachmeyer (Hildesheim) addresses the climatic and social changes affecting bamboo flute production in Bolivia, presenting a transdisciplinary music ethnological approach to preserving a cultural technique.
