The purpose of this doctoral dissertation is to investigate the role of Social Media in political communication, in the case of Greece. Specifically, the present thesis is a comparative study of how the three principal actors of political communication - citizens, journalists and politicians - communicate via Twitter in times of crisis. The reasoning of the thesis is part of the scientific debate related with the role of Social Media as political communication tools. However, in contrast with the most related researches, it approaches the phenomenon of Twitter communication mainly with qualitative methods and over time. This thesis is divided into the theoretical and empirical part. Base of the theoretical study is the theory of the network society, developed by the Spanish sociologist Manuel Castells, as well as Chadwick's approach to understand the new ecosystem that is created, as a hybrid media system. The empirical part presents the research results that come from the study of ten different periods of crisis. Then, these results are correlated with the findings came through 15 in depth interviews with protagonists of political communication, in order to result in more reliable conclusions. The research subject is innovative due to the fact that until today, has not been conducted any research for the case of Greece, that compares the content of Twitter in different crisis periods. Furthermore, our research attempts to be the first in Greece, that approaches the communication phenomenon through Twitter mainly with qualitative methods and over time.
