This diploma thesis deals with the implementation of a part of a network protocol at the Datalink layer, which is not executed by any software but by the hardware itself. The code is written in one of the most well-known hardware description languages, VHDL. Thesis sets as fact the communication over an Ethernet connection via 64bit signals. The function performed by the code is to read the 64bit signals, to recognize the preamble of an Ethernet frame, to store its signals, to execute the error checking, to read stored MAC addresses and to compare them with the address of each frame- aiming to send the whole frame to the right destination. The programs used to write and simulate the code are notepad ++ and modelsim respectively
