The aim of this thesis was to examine and comment on Karl Popper���s critique of Plato���s political philosophy and to study his main position that the Platonic philosophical thought can be considered a forerunner ��� on a theoretical level ��� of the totalitarian regimes of the 20th century. Moreover, it broaches the historical and political conditions that affected and formed the political thought and stance of the two thinkers. The first chapter examines the influence of the socioeconomic conditions in the 5th and 4th centuries on the formation of Plato���s personality and political thought. The second chapter presents and comments Karl Popper���s critique of the platonic political philosophy. This happens in four axes. The first axis concerns the Platonic beauty and Plato���s historicist views, the second regards Plato���s descriptive sociology his views on change and stance, nature and convention; the third axis his political program and his views on justice, the principle of leadership, the philosopher king and Plato���s utopianism, while the fourth axis is an effort to interpret Plato���s antidemocratic attitude. The third chapter examines the reading and interpretation of Plato by Popper within the historical conditions at the beginning of the 20th century as well as the reception and discussion of his theory.
