The aim of this thesis was to highlight the relationship between the Comintern and the Soviet policy throughout the existence of the former (1919-1943). The biggest part of the research was the study of the conferences and decisions of Comintern in conjunction with the corresponding developments in Moscow's policy, both at home and abroad. The main premise was that the subordination of Comintern in the needs of the Soviet policy was not predetermined but something occurred through lengthy procedures. The Third International was initially not a tool of the USSR, but became so because of the persistent failures of the Communist parties and the continued strengthening of the Soviet Union and the Bolsheviks both in the diplomatic and in the economic field. The contradiction between ideology and Realpolitik emerged fully with the outbreak of the Second World War, when the needs of the USSR led to the dissolution of the Comintern, although the long-term bond between the two sides shows that they functioned much more in a complementary than in a contradictory way.
