In 2020, 60 designers and creative thinkers were invited by Australian Design Centre (ADC) to capture their thoughts in sketches, diagrams, drawings, text or collage on the experience of COVID-19 and living and working in isolation. The series of journals were exhibited at ADC, Sydney, NSW in Design Isolate in November 2020 and were subsequently acquired by the State Library of NSW as a complete archive. ADC commissioned the book Design Isolate: The pandemic through a creative lens to document a selection of the outputs from each of the journals. The short written piece Osmosis was written to capture the concepts behind the design of the book by Stephen Goddard, which drew on the themes of disruption and the universal and indiscriminate impact of COVID. It positioned the book design within a history of book design projects which commenced in 1990, and accompanied a selection of the journal entries by Goddard.
